Discover the World of Orchids
Botanically Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants. There are more than 25 000 different species in nature. Of course the experts keep arguing about how many there are exactly, but whichever way, 25 000 give or take a few is a HUGE number. There is no way I could even start to introduce you to even a fraction of them here. That is not the intention of this site anyway. What I would like to do is take you on picture tours, mostly through our greenhouses, at different times of the year and show you the amazing, sometimes odd, mostly beautiful, always fascinating world of orchids.

A Christmas tree with a difference
We always have a big Christmas celebration here at our house and for the decoration I love stretching my imagination and moving away from the very traditional. This year I used an Oncidium, standing well over 6 foot in it's container, as our Christmas tree. Needless to say it is a very eco-friendly solution, as the plant went straight back to the greenhouse after Christmas.

This is Vanilla planifolia (also known as Vanilla fragrans - I told you the experts can't agree on anything). It is the flower of the vanilla pod used in cooking. The pod or "bean" as it is sometimes called you are perhaps familiar with is the seed capsule of this orchid and the tiny black dots you scrape out are the seeds. Vamilla is the only orchid plant used commercially outside the horticultural field. The plant originates from Mexico, but is today cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas around the world.
